DIY: How to make Infused Water

If you're like me, and you've spent the last couple of days outside, you are sure to have notice that it got slightly hotter... 35 degrees of scorching heat actually. And with all this heat, comes three massive struggles:

  1. Lack of energy
  2. Excess of sweat
  3. Lack of hydration. (thanks, sweat.)
Whilst lazing around in the sun all month is perfectly acceptable, and sweat isn't something that can easily be avoided, I decided to scour the internet for ways to rehydrate. Hence today's blog post, the famous "Infused Water" phenomenon...

Infused Water

Studies have shown that drinking water naturally boosts your metabolism, and drinking fruit infused water for weight loss can be an easy way to increase your water intake. Infused waters are packed full of natural vitamins, and can help detox your body from some any nasty toxins or help flush out heavy meals (e.g. that Cheeky Nando's with extra wedges you haddddd to have.)

Some benefits include:
  • Naturally helps your body release fat cells
  • keeps food moving through your system
  • Keeps organs reprenished while you sweat
  • reduces fatigue in the afternoon or during workouts. (and helps you recuperate faster from a session too!)

~ Summer Fruit recipe ~

Ingredients (per 500ml):
A slice of watermelon cut into small chunks
3 medium strawberries
A sprig of mint
Elderflower cordial (Optional)
400ml of water

Method:

Fill your container with 400ml of water. Tap water is fine, although for an extra boost you may want to buy spring or mineral water. (so your not ingesting loads of cleaning agents.) I used a 400ml bottle from Muji for £3, which is robust enough to have at the bottom of my bag during a working day.
*
Next, I added a shot of elderflower cordial. This helps to give the water a small kick of flavour, and the naturally sweet flavour works amazingly well with summery fruits. Of course, you can add any cordial you like, or none at all if you prefer something a bit more minimal.
*
Next, add your fruit. Depending on how big you chopped up your ingredients, some of your fruit pieces could float to the bottom, but doesn't effect anything but the nice layered look.
*
Now, if you're like me and you love minty things, add your leaves now for an intense flavour, otherwise, just add them in later as a finishing touch.
*
Place in the fridge for 3+ hours. I think its best to leave it overnight to really infuse as much of the fruit as possible, although this can leave your berries looking a bit worn out later on.
Vóila! You now have your very own bottle of infused water.

Benefits... Mint is known as a strong antitoxant, and is often used in detox diets to help flush out the system. It also works as a stimulant, so don't take any minty drinks to bed, you'll be up all night with energy. Strawberries are full of vitamin C and boost the immune system (probably why its so sort after during pregnancy) and watermelons... well they're full of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. This is probably the healthiest drink you'll have all day.

  1. This is the least expensive of the water bottle infuser choices, but it still does a good job. The built in straw is a nice touch, and the low price of this infuse water bottle makes it affordable to buy a few to keep at work, school, gym, etc. Or give them healthy gifts at www.thedetoxbottle.com/collections/all/products/double-walled-glass-water-bottle-with-strainer!
